The Blind Destination: Our Island Wedding in Ios (September 2023)

June 2, 2026

If you want to know what "Life on the Road" looks like when it hits your personal life, it looks like planning a Mediterranean wedding across two continents for an island you’ve only seen on Google Maps. We traded the predictable ballroom or Golf Country Club for the raw, rugged edges of the Cyclades, and it turned out to be the most spectacular risk we’ve ever taken.

The "Long-Distance" Production: Planning Across Borders

Planning a destination wedding is hard. Planning a destination wedding blind when the bride and groom don't even live in the same country is a completely different beast.

  • The Blueprint: I was coordinating everything from Toronto, John was operating out of London, and the venue was in Greece.
  • The Tour Factor: To make it even more interesting, John was on the road for the vast majority of the planning phase. Trying to pin down a groom for linen colours or seating charts when he’s dealing with production schedules and stadium routing is a masterclass in patience.

The Guest List Drama: The "Hot Cake" Shuffle

Because John lives his life surrounded by touring schedules where everything changes by the hour, he treated our wedding guest list the exact same way.

  • The Chaos: He was adding and dropping guests like they were hot cakes. People were on the list, off the list, and back on the list even up until three weeks before the wedding.
  • The Venue Save: I wanted to absolute kill him. If you’ve ever planned an event, you know that changing numbers that close to the date is a nightmare. Luckily, the team at Ios Club was incredibly understanding, flexible, and responsive. They took the shifting logistics in stride and kept me from completely losing my mind.

The Logistics: Planes, Boats, and Guest Shuttles

Getting a group of 27 to a hidden Greek island requires precision routing.

  • The Route: We flew British Airways from London to Santorini, and from there, hopped the ferry over to Ios. It’s a journey that filters out the faint-hearted and leaves you with the ultimate ride-or-die crew.
  • The Sanctuary: We set up camp at the Ios Palace Hotel. The beach was right outside our door, the water was a perfect, crystal-clear turquoise, and the hotel handled all the transportation logistics, shuttling our guests to and from the venue so nobody had to navigate the island roads in heels.

The Backstage Setup: Prep and Chaos at Ios Palace

We set up our headquarters at the Ios Palace Hotel, located right on the sweeping golden sands of Mylopotas Beach. The crystal-clear water was ideal for snorkelling, but the morning of the wedding, the real action was happening inside the suites.

  • The Glam Squad: The hotel put us in touch with a recommended local glam team who arrived right at the hotel to handle hair and makeup. Having them on-site turned the bridal suite into a calm, professional backstage lounge. Keep in mind, cash is king here and most vendors want to be paid in Euros not bank transfers.
  • The Missed Reset: In true tour fashion, the hotel had arranged for morning massages to help us decompress before the ceremony. Sadly, we were running around handling last-minute logistics and had to skip them; a classic "Life on the Road" sacrifice.
  • The Groom’s Impossible Mission: To keep things traditional, John and the boys took their own separate rooms for the night before the wedding. On the morning of, John was handed the absolute impossible task of getting two teenage boys suited, booted, and presentable for a high-end destination wedding while simultaneously trying to get himself ready. It was a logistical miracle that they all made it to the altar looking flawless.

The Venue: Sunset and Symmetry at Ios Club

We chose Ios Club, a legendary sunset bar carved straight into the granite rocks opposite the Chora. They capped the guest list at a maximum of 50 people, which was perfect for our intimate group.

  • The Setup: We had our 27 guests seated at one long, beautiful table overlooking the Aegean.
  • The Vibe: We got married exactly as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of neon orange and purple. The cocktail reception was pure "Lux" flowing champagne accompanied by a live saxophone player echoing off the cliffs.
  • The Execution: For a team we'd only ever emailed, the venue was incredibly responsive, professional, and easy to work with, guiding us through every vendor recommendation from thousands of miles away.
  • Pro Tip: Just like in North America, the second a vendor hears the word "wedding", the price triples. We were quoted over $5000 for very minimal flowers. After speaking with the venue, we ended up passing on centre pieces and my mum purchased 3 small bouquets and 3 boutonnieres the morning of for $150. The dry floral arrangements that came with the venue were beautiful and more than enough.

The Feast: 5-Star Execution

Usually, wedding food is a "Mass Production" compromise. Not here. The culinary team at Ios Club pulled off a literal miracle.

  • The Apps: The appetizers were fabulous fresh, local, and packed with Mediterranean flavour; the tuna tartar melted in your mouth
  • The Steak: They did something I’ve never seen a wedding kitchen successfully do: they actually asked our guests how they wanted their steaks cooked and delivered every single one to absolute perfection. It was a five-star restaurant experience disguised as a wedding dinner.
  • The Bar: They do offer a number of bar packages and will procure different alcohol requests for you for a fee. We had the basic bar pack and it was more than enough for our group. We did pay extra to have John's preferred whiskey for late night shots.
  • The Divine Cake: We sourced our wedding cake from a talented local island baker. Planning it blind meant we hadn't tasted a single crumb beforehand, but it turned out absolutely divine; light, fresh, and the perfect sweet finish.
  • The Midnight Shift: You can’t have a proper "Loud" celebration without midnight fuel. After hours of dancing and champagne, they rolled out a massive midnight buffet of mini burgers and fries. It was exactly what the crew needed to keep the energy going into the early hours.
  • Guest Favours: We had a supplier of mine create custom scratch cards for everyone. To get your prize, you had to complete the task on the card. Did I get an awkward lap dance from the best man; heck ya I did! We also had custom shot glasses made with our names and wedding date as a take home for everyone.

The "Loud" Intermission: The Police Bribe

You can’t have a true "2 Turntables" wedding without a little bit of drama. The music was going, the energy was high, and apparently, it was a bit too "Loud" for the local authorities.

  • The Knock: The police showed up for a "noise complaint." The timing couldn't have been more perfect as my new husband was fully engaged in building a pyramid of shots; I married a total winner!
  • The Fix: This is where the "Life on the Road" tour management skills come in handy. A tactical, smooth transaction, let’s call it an unofficial event permit fee, was handed over. The police left happy, and the bass kept rolling.

Day Two: The Recovery Pool Party

The morning after, we kept the momentum going with a private pool party back at the Ios Palace.

  • The Setup: Customized cocktails, local snacks, and a complete tech-reset by the water.
  • The Ocean: The beach right outside the hotel was ideal for snorkelling and water sports. The local beachfront spots like SALT Restaurant Bar on Mylopotas Beach served up incredible fresh Mediterranean food.

Island Exploration: Beyond the Wedding Venue

Once the final guest list settled and the crew landed, we discovered that Ios has an incredible rhythm outside of the venue gates.

  • Getting Lost in the Chora: This is the main village, and it’s a classic Cycladic dream. It’s a pedestrian-only maze of whitewashed stone alleys, cascading bougainvillea, and tiny hidden chapels. In the morning, it's dead quiet and perfect for a slow walk with a frappe. At night, the tiny doors open up into eclectic cocktail bars.
  • The Trek to Homer’s Tomb: For a bit of ancient history, take a drive to the northernmost tip of the island to visit the historic ruins where the epic poet Homer is supposedly buried. The drive out there is rugged and wild, and the cliffside views of the Aegean are pure drama.
  • The Panagia Gremiotissa (Church of the Cliff): Located at the absolute highest point of the Chora. It’s a steep climb up the stone steps, but if you make it to the top, you get a 360-degree look at the neighbouring islands.
  • Mylopotas Beach: This is where we set up camp at the Ios Palace Hotel. It’s a massive, sweeping crescent of golden sand. The water is pristine, calm, and ideal for snorkelling, paddle boarding, and water activities right outside the hotel doors.

Survival 101: The Long-Distance Wedding Edition

  • The Grace: If your partner is on tour while you're planning, expect the logistics to get messy. Breathe through it and find a venue that understands the industry rhythm.
  • The Water Law: Stick to bottled water on the smaller Greek islands to keep your guests out of trouble.
  • The Restroom Ritual: The "Life on the Road" rule is eternal: Always keep those tissues in your beach bag. The island plumbing has character; your preparation needs to have structure.

The Takeaway

Planning a wedding blind, across borders, while your groom is shuffling guests like tour passes is a wild ride. But standing at that one long table, watching the sunset over the Aegean with a live sax playing, you realize that sometimes, the most chaotic setups lead to the most perfect encores.

Talk soon (and probably loudly),
