The "High-Low" Guide to Da Nang: 12 Days in Vietnam
March 29, 2026
Here's the thing about John and I when we travel; we love the points, we love the lounge, and I love a seamless itinerary. But as much as we live for the "Lux," I’ve learned that the most authentic soul of a country is found in the grit of the street. In January, John and I took that philosophy to Vietnam for 12 amazing days, and Da Nang completely rewired our expectations.
Forget the frantic, exhaust-heavy chaos of the north. Da Nang is the "City of the Future". It is immaculately clean, flawlessly organized, and safe enough to wander at 3:00 AM without a second thought. It’s a city where you can pivot from a five-star resort to a $2 beer on the sand without missing a beat.
The Marathon: Red Tape & Changi Runs
The journey was a trek: Barcelona - Doha - Singapore - Da Nang. When you’re crossing that many time zones on world-class carriers, the 20+ hours actually feel like part of the ritual.
- The Paperwork: Don’t let the "chill" vibe fool you; you need your ducks in a row. Canadians and EU citizens must have a valid 90-day E-visa. Apply early.
- The Singapore Loophole: If you’re transiting through SIN, you have to hit that SG Arrival Card and health declaration within 3 days of arrival. It’s a digital gatekeeper you don't want to mess with.
The Golden Perks: Four Points By Sheraton
We based ourselves at the Four Points by Sheraton , paid in full with points. This is where the "Lux" kicks in. Thanks to our Gold status, we were moved to an ocean-view room with a private balcony and a soaking tub that saw fresh bath salts delivered every single day.
We paid a literal $3 CAD extra for a breakfast buffet that was next level, and I indulged in a full spa day for under $75 CAD. Even the "boring" stuff was a win: a full load of laundry sent out for $15 CAD and returned same-day, perfectly folded. That’s the "road" luxury we live for.
Sights & Surrealism
Da Nang’s sights feel larger than life. We took a world-record cable car over misty waterfalls to reach Ba Na Hills. Walking the Golden Bridge, those massive "hands of God" holding a silk thread through the morning mist is surreal. Pro-tip: Take the very first cable car of the day to beat the tour groups. Also, the temperature will be vastly different up there so dress in layers!
Standing on the Son Tra Peninsula is the Lady Buddha, the tallest in Asia. Right nearby is Son Tra Marina, a Santorini-style bar that is the only place to be for sunset. And if you’re heading back from the lanterns of Hoi An (a $20 CAD Grab ride), the Marble Mountains are a mandatory stop for the hidden caves.
Survival 101: Traffic & The "Bum Gun"
Vietnam will test your nerves in the best way possible.
- The Traffic: There is no such thing as a traffic light here. Driving is wild, and crossing the street is quite literally taking your life in your hands. The trick? Walk slowly, don't stop, and pray the sea of motorbikes parts around you like the Red Sea.
- The Water: Bottled water is key. Don't even brush your teeth with the tap water unless you want your "Lux" trip to turn into a "Lamentable" one.
- The Restroom Ritual: Public washrooms are everywhere and surprisingly clean, but here is the catch: bring your own toilet paper. Most spots rely on the "bum gun," and if you aren't ready for that lifestyle, you’ll be stranded.
Most restaurants operate on Facebook messenger which is something I've gone through life without. Luckily, John, his amazing friends and our "local" guides, Chantelle and Ryan, are all part of the FB club so reservations were sorted by them but be prepared to need it for many things.

Dining & Drinks: Michelin Quality for "Dirt Cheap"
Having friends who relocated to Da Nang meant we skipped the tourist traps and headed straight for the local gems.
- Bep Cuon Da Nang: This was one of the best meals of the entire trip. We fed four people (including drinks!) for under $65 CAD.
- Banh Mi Ba Dao: A fantastic, family-owned and operated spot that is a must-visit for authentic flavours.
- Butcher Steak makes incredible steak that give 5 star steak houses in Toronto and London a run for their money and is a fraction of the cost.
After Dark: Fire, Water & Beach Vibes
The city really comes alive once the sun sets, and because it's so safe, you can explore well into the night.
- The Dragon Bridge: This isn't just a bridge; it’s a performance. Every weekend at 9:00 PM, the dragon breathes actual fire and then sprays water over the crowds. It’s electric.
- Night Markets: Head to the Son Tra Night Market right after the fire show for street food and local crafts. It’s bustling but remarkably clean. Tip, do not eat the fish here as it often isn't fresh. Opt for a proper fish restaurant with the huge tanks and live fish for all your seafood cravings.
- The 12-Hour Happy Hour: Head to Paradise Beach Bar for a marathon happy hour where beers are just $2.
- The "Vibe" Spots: Esco Beach Bar is perfect for the atmosphere and enjoying the beach view and vibes.
The Takeaway
Da Nang is the ultimate proof that you can live the high life without losing the pulse of the street. It’s a city of contrasts that manages to be both high-energy and incredibly peaceful. It’s clean, it’s safe, and it’s a mandatory stop for anyone who actually gives a damn about the journey.
Talk soon (and probably loudly),
