The O’Flynn Castle & The West Coast Run (Summer 2024)

May 14, 2026

After the sun of Cape Verde, Summer 2024 was all about the green hills of Ireland. We met the kids in Dublin, grabbed a rental car, and headed south for a trip that was part heritage hunt, part culinary tour, and 100% "Loud & Lux." Ireland isn't just a country; it’s a masterclass in "Life on the Road.

The "Home Base" Hack: Farm Life in Clonakilty

Forget the sterile city hotels; we went for the "Silent Luxury" of a farm stay just outside of Clonakilty, near Cork.

  • The Hospitality: Our Airbnb was on a stunning farm, run by a lovely Irish woman who greeted us with a batch of cookies and a fridge stocked with local Irish butter, eggs, and bread. That "local touch" is the ultimate "Lux" move.
  • The Strategy: Using Clonakilty as a home base allowed us to retreat to the quiet of the countryside after the "Loud" energy of the day’s adventures.

The "Backroad" Reality: Nerves of Steel

If you think you know how to drive, try the Irish backroads. This isn't a highway cruise; it’s a high-stakes game of chicken with hedges.

  • The "Boreens": Many of the roads John charted were barely wider than the car itself, lined with ancient stone walls or hedges that don't move an inch.
  • The Standoff: You’ll be flying around a blind curve and come face-to-face with a massive tractor or a herd of sheep.
  • The Rule: You need nerves of steel. It involves tactical reversing into tiny "passing places" and a lot of "the mirrors are definitely touching" moments. John handled it like a pro, but be warned: this is not for the faint of heart.

The Great Castle Hunt: The O’Flynn Legacy

Day one was a mission: finding the O’Flynn Castle. My mum’s family has a castle, and we weren't leaving without finding it.

  • The Discovery: John put his charting skills to the test and tracked it down in Macroom.
  • The "Loud" Reality: It might be a "pile of rubble" now, but standing on family land with the kids and taking those pictures was a "Lux" moment that money can’t buy. It’s a literal piece of the heritage vault.
  • The Celebration: We toasted the O’Flynn ancestors that night at Craft & Co in Clonakilty. Pints and incredible pizza; sometimes the best meals are the ones that follow a successful mission.

The West Coast Run: Blarney to Galway

With the castle found, John charted out the ultimate "High-Low" loop across the West.

  • The Blarney Stone: We hit Blarney Castle first. Yes, we did the "Loud" tourist ritual and kissed the stone. You haven't truly lived until you've hung upside down from a medieval battlement.
  • The Cliffs of Moher: We pushed on to the Cliffs. Even if you’ve seen the pictures, the scale of the Atlantic hitting those rocks is a religious experience.
  • Galway & Moran’s: We ended the run in Galway at Moran’s Oyster Cottage. If you’re a seafood lover, this is a mandatory pilgrimage for world-class oysters pulled straight from the cold Atlantic.

Pro-Tips for the Emerald Isle

  • Trust the N-Roads: Google Maps will try to save you 2 minutes by sending you down a "grass-in-the-middle" track. Unless you’re looking for a castle, stay on the National (N) roads.
  • The "One-Finger Wave": When a local pulls into a passing place for you on a narrow road, a quick wave from the steering wheel is the mandatory "thank you."
  • Beyond Moher: If you have time, hit Kilkenny Castle for the "Lux" version of history or Slieve League in Donegal for cliffs that are three times higher than Moher.

Survival 101: The "Irish Road" Rules

  • The Rain: In Ireland, "Summer" is a suggestion. Keep a high-quality raincoat in the back seat at all times.
  • The Water: The tap water is pristine. Use your reusable bottles and save your money for the Guinness.
  • The Restroom Ritual: Pubs are the sanctuary of the road. Most are clean and welcoming, but as always: keep your tissues handy. A "Life on the Road" veteran is never caught off guard by a rural supply chain.

The Takeaway

Ireland 2024 was about reconnecting with the O’Flynn roots and showing the kids that "Luxury" is a fresh oyster in Galway, while "Loud" is the adrenaline rush of a narrow backroad standoff. We found the castle, we kissed the stone, and we survived the hedges.

Talk soon (and probably loudly),
